Migration and Consolidation of Value-Added Services (VAS)

Overview

In a bid to enhance operational efficiency while launching advanced services over their 4G+ network, a telecom provider sought to streamline their mobile network infrastructure and legacy Value-Added Services (VAS). This initiative aimed to push the boundaries of high-speed mobile data connectivity.

Business Challenges

The project encountered several complexities, particularly in migrating 12 VAS from four different vendors to a single vendor. With many intricate customizations already in place, it was crucial to maintain feature parity and ensure uninterrupted service. To facilitate a seamless integration and smooth transition, technical teams collaborated closely to assess the existing services and their deployment environments. Like many service providers, managing VAS and core messaging services from multiple vendors proved to be both complicated and costly.

Approach

The delivery of the Value Consolidation Platform (VCP) occurred in two phases, spanning a total of fourteen months. This initiative was part of a larger project to transition the company’s 2G/3G core network to a 4G architecture. The objectives of consolidating legacy VAS onto a unified platform operating in a private cloud included:

  • Long-term capital expenditure (CAPEX) savings
  • Reduced costs for new features and capacity      expansions
  • 40% reduction in operational costs
  • Lower support and maintenance expenses
  • Simplified VAS network architecture
  • Decreased vendor count
  • Integration of IMS/VoLTE with legacy VAS
  • A unified charging and provisioning interface
  • Reduced hardware footprint
  • Enhanced operational efficiency

Business Impact

All phases of the project were successfully executed, with the VCP platform now serving the entire customer base. Since its launch, the platform has facilitated the delivery of over 3 billion SMS messages, more than 1.3 billion Peer-to-Peer SMS messages, and 40 million USSD transactions. This project not only achieved its immediate goals but also positioned the telecom provider for sustained growth and efficiency in the future.
